Advancing Mining Safety Through Smart Electronics

Powering Innovation in Longwall Mining and Hazard Detection
At Hetech, we’re proud to play a role in advancing the safety and efficiency of Australia’s mining sector through world-class electronics design and manufacturing. One of our recent collaborations has been with Quantum and the CSIRO, supporting the development of two groundbreaking technologies; the Longwall Automation System (LASC) and the ExScan 3D laser scanner. These technologies are transforming how underground mines operate, giving operators clearer insight into conditions and improving safety for workers in one of the world’s most challenging environments.
1. Longwall Automation System (LASC): Smarter, Safer Mining Operations
The Longwall Automation System (LASC), developed by CSIRO, has revolutionised underground coal mining by introducing automation to longwall equipment. Using advanced sensors and control systems, LASC allows shearers and roof supports to operate with precision and minimal manual intervention, improving both productivity and worker safety.

Hetech’s contribution involved manufacturing the electronics at the heart of this technology, ensuring reliability in harsh mining environments where dust, vibration and heat are constant challenges. Each component was built to meet stringent mining safety standards, supporting the seamless integration of automation underground.
Through this collaboration, Hetech helped turn a world-leading research project into a commercially viable system which is now used globally; making mining safer and more efficient for its workers.
2. ExScan: Seeing Below the Surface with 3D Laser Mapping
The ExScan 3D laser scanner, also developed by CSIRO and commercialised with Quantum, provides real-time visibility of underground environments. It captures highly detailed, three-dimensional images of mine walls and tunnels, enabling operators to detect movement, fractures and other potential hazards before they become critical.

Hetech worked closely with Quantum to manufacture the complex embedded electronics that power ExScan’s sensing and communication capabilities. The result is a rugged, intrinsically safe system designed to perform reliably under explosive atmosphere conditions. By delivering electronics that meet strict industrial and safety standards, Hetech has helped ensure ExScan’s dependable operation, which is a critical factor when every second counts underground.
Engineering the Future of Mining Safety
Our partnership with Quantum and CSIRO showcases how Australian innovation and manufacturing excellence can combine to deliver real-world impact.
Through precision engineering, rigorous testing and a commitment to quality, Hetech continues to power the technologies that make mining safer, smarter and more sustainable. One system at a time.
